London 2012 Olympics Mascot

The first of the London 2012 mascots is Wenlock, who takes his name from the town of Much Wenlock in Shropshire. Much Wenlock has a rich history pre-dating the early medieval period when it would have been a Celtic town. Its name probably derives from the Welsh words Gwen LLwg or White Place.

More recently, Much Wenlock has been holding its own form of the ancient Greek Olympic Games. The Much Wenlock games were started in 1850 by Dr. William Penny Brookes. The good doctor went on to found the Shropshire Olympian Games in 1862 and help found the National Olympic Games as well.

The Wenlock Games are still held to this day. Wenlock , the London 2012 Olympics mascot has the task of encouraging children to take part in the Olympic fun. Villages, towns and cities all over the country will be holding fun events to get children involved in the games in some way.

As chief London 2012 Olympics mascot, Wenlock's main task will be to keep the fun and enthusiasm rolling along in the public until the Olympic Games begin in earnest in July 2012.

The second London 2012 Olympics mascot is Mandeville, although strictly speaking Mandeville is the mascot of the Paralympic Games which will be held a few weeks after the regular Olympics are over.

The beginnings of the Paralympic Games was in 1948. Sir Ludwig Gurrmann held his own style of Olympic sports games among veterans of the Second War with spinal injuries at Stoke Mandeville hospital.

These sports games grew over the years into the Paralympic Games and so the second London 2012 Olympics mascot proudly takes his name from there.

Nowadays, the Paralympic games are not only for men, soldiers or residents of Stoke Mandeville hospital either. They have grown into a worldwide event. The Paralympic games will take place in the same venues as the regular Olympic Games once the first set of athletes has moved out.

You will see Wenlock and Mandeville more and more over the run up to the games. You can be sure that these fun-loving London 2012 mascots will be running around stoking up enthusiasm.

If you want to follow the antics of these London 2012 mascots, just go over to the home page of the official London 2012 games web site where you will see a link to Wenlock and Mandeville's blogs.
